About LA Gamelan Festival

Gamelan Burat Wangi is proud to present: LA GAMELAN FESTIVAL, a celebration of our founders Bapak I Nyoman Wenten and Ibu Nanik Wenten, spreading Indonesian culture for 50 years. Planned for June 14-15, 2025, LA Gamelan Festival will feature prominent gamelan groups from all over the U.S.A. as well as dance and cultural groups showcasing Indonesia’s diversity.

BACKGROUND

Gamelan Burat Wangi (“Fragrant Offering”) is a professional Balinese gamelan music and dance group based out of the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia. The group was founded in 1972 by I Nyoman Wenten (Artistic Director), Nanik Wenten (Dance Director), and K.P.H. Notoprojo, the most prominent Javanese musician and composer in the 20th century.

In 1975, I Nyoman Wenten officially started his teaching career at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Valencia. The year 2025 marks his 50^th year as an educator in the U.S.A., and Gamelan Burat Wangi wants to honor his enormous contribution in spreading Indonesian culture by presenting a gamelan festival.

MISSION

LA Gamelan Festival aims to promote Indonesian culture, while fostering artistic exchange between musicians, dancers and artists in celebration of I Nyoman Wenten and Nanik Wenten’s 50^th year of teaching in the U.S.A.

PROGRAM

The two-day LA Gamelan Festival will feature prominent gamelan, dance and cultural groups showcasing Indonesia’s diversity. At the Indonesian Consulate General (location venue), there will be one outdoor main stage, vendors selling food, drinks and merchandise, and other information booths. Come and join us, mingle with gamelan musicians and dancers, and enjoy Indonesian delicacies. This event is open to the public.
